Learn about the Bicycle Friendly Communities Program - Nov. 7th

From the League of American Bicyclists on November, 7, 2008

Make plans to hear Andy Clarke, Executive Director, and Bill Nesper, Director of the Bicycle Friendly Communities Program, from the League of American Bicyclists speak about the Bicycle Friendly Communities Program at the Farm & Home Center on Friday, November 7, 2008. Registration starts at 7:30 a.m. and the presentation begins at 8 a.m.

Reserve your seat today at no charge to learn more about the process of earning recognition as a Bicycle Friendly Community.  The Bicycle Friendly Community Campaign is an awards program that recognizes municipalities that actively support bicycling. A Bicycle-Friendly Community provides safe accommodation for cycling and encourages its residents to bike for transportation and recreation. The League of American Bicyclists administers the Bicycle Friendly Community Campaign.

Since 2003, the League of American Bicyclists has received applications for the Bicycle Friendly Communities Program from more than 213 communities. Currently 84 cities and counties are designated Bicycle Friendly Communities. The program is generously supported by Trek Bicycles and Bikes Belong. Applicants complete a detailed on-line form with numerous questions in five key areas: engineering, education, encouragement, enforcement, and evaluation/planning. Local cyclists, national experts, and League staff review the applications. For the complete list of Bicycle Friendly Communities and more information on the program visit www.bicyclefriendlycommunity.org

It is important to recognize communities as they begin to build bicycle friendliness into their network. But a designation only goes to communities with established records in two or more of the five categories which are known as the Five E’s:

Education: Does the community have systems in place to train children and adult cyclists?

Engineering: Are bicyclists included in the city’s transportation plan?

Enforcement: Do police officers understand and enforce bicyclists’ rights and responsibilities?

Encouragement: Does the community participate in Bike Month, offer bike rodeos, host community bike rides, or otherwise encourage cycling?

Evaluation: Does the community have methods in place to ensure their bicyclist programs are making a difference?

RSVP by Monday, November 3 at 299-8333 or to Lauri Ahlskog ahlskogl@co.lancaster.pa.us. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. and the presentation begins at 8 a.m. at the Farm & Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster, PA 17601.

Laserdome promotes adoption through free family-child matching - Oct. 27th

The Laserdome is hoping to “zap” families with awareness of the difference they can make in the life of a waiting child through adoption or foster care.

To increase knowledge of the need for adoptive and foster families just as National Adoption Month, November, begins, the Laserdome and owner Karl Ross are sponsoring Diakon Adoption & Foster Care Night from 5 to 10 p.m., Oct. 27. The Laserdome is located at 2050 Auction Road, Manheim.

During that period, the Laserdome will provide free access to its activities and games including laser tag and all video games to the general public and to families in the adoption process, waiting children, adoption caseworkers and their families. Youths from the Pennsylvania Statewide Adoption & Permanency Network’s Older Child Matching Initiative, who are available for adoption, will be invited to enjoy the evening’s festivities.

The evening’s main focus will be a matching event open to both waiting families and the general public interested in learning more about adoption. The matching event will allow families to meet and network with both public and private adoption agencies with children available for adoption.

In addition, images of waiting children will be shown between scheduled shows. A “trick or treat” will be held for all children accompanied by an adult to increase awareness of the need for adoptive families. The event also will feature informational displays about adoption.

Further, the Laserdome is contributing half of every $10 admission fee throughout October for the Scream in the Dark haunted house attraction to Diakon Adoption & Foster Care to further efforts to find families for waiting children. More information about the Laserdome, which is wheelchair-accessible, can be found at http://www.laserdome.com.

Currently, more than 1,300 children in Pennsylvania are waiting for an adoptive family.  These children are mostly school-aged children with special needs, legally free for adoption, and currently living in foster care or residential facilities. Adoption-related financial assistance is available for these children through the statewide network, known as SWAN.

Diakon Adoption & Foster Care has been finding adoptive homes for children with special needs since 1972. Its Pennsylvania offices are located in York, Mechanicsburg, and Topton.

The concert is at 7pm on Sunday October 19th at the Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre, 510 Centerville Road. The doors will open at 6:30 P.M. and tickets cost $10 each at the door.

Jennifer Cowan is the creative force behind Woman’s Work. She was inspired by stories of courage and faith she heard among her family and her friends’ families as women of all ages and backgrounds dealt with breast cancer. As artistic director and teacher for NetCo Dance Company and Silver Spring Dance, she uses her influence to encourage young women to take care of their bodies and asks dancers to share their art to benefit this wonderful cause.

Ten choreographers are presenting their works at this concert. Jennifer Cowan, Dana Shelley and Kristin Barnett of NetCo Dance Company, Joanne Trusz-Weaver and Tracy Sanchez of PK Project, Lizzie Martin of the youth dance company Dancer’s Anonymous, Priscilla Barden-Kauffold of Kinetics Dance Theatre, Opus Dance Company and others will offer original compositions. Cowan is pleased that the local dance scene as well as companies from Maryland and Philadelphia are so well represented. "Some local dancers perform with companies in surrounding cities and these groups are so artistically giving to this cause. I feel very blessed with all the support this project has received."

To donate a raffle item or for more information about "Womans Work," please call Silver Spring Dance Conservatory at 285-0550 or e-mail the studio at ssdcdance@embarqmail.com.
